General John Archer Elmore

John Archer Elmore (1762-1834) son of Archelaus Elmore and Susannah Morris, husband of 2) Mary Ann Saxon and 2) Nancy Ann Martin. He entered the Continental Army during the American Revolution while still a youth, and served in the Virginia Line under Greene's command and was with him through the his tour of the Carolinas. He was present at the surrender of Cornwallis at Yorktown. After the war he settled in Laurens District, South Carolina where he served as a Representative in the South Carolina Legislature and continued his military service in the militia, attaining the rank of General. In 1821 he represented Autuga County in the Alabama Legislature. Elmore County, Alabama was named in his honor.  [000345]
