Ring Family History
Hill is an extremely common English place name that described the man
who kept his home on or near a prominent hill, from Old English hyll =
hill. The -y was pronounced in various ways in medieval England and the surname
It is a corruption of the Germine Hild meaning "battle." Hell developed from the same context with a different pronunciation. Sometimes
the name was a shortened form of Hillary, or Hildabrand. Our Hill family line originates in Wiveton,
Norfolk County, England with Robert Hill who was born in 1589.
NOTE: Many researchers believe that
William
Hill6, born 1765 in Wake County, North Carolina is the son of
Sion
Hill5 born 1718 in Halifax County, North Carolina. This researcher has not
yet found sufficient proof. Further, I am not sure that William Hill6, born 1765,
is Mark's father or that William6 married Elizabeth Cope. There was a William Hill
in Perry County, Tennessee in 1820 along with Mark Hill7. Some researchers state
that Mark's mother was Sarah McDonald. Though the data presented here is believed to be
accurate and I have confidence in
Mark Hill7 on, the link between Mark7 and William6, and thus preceding generations, is speculative. This speculation is
based primarily on the fact that William's son Mark7 named a son Sion, a prevalent
given name in the Hill-Kinge line.
