Ring Family History

The name Gilliam is of British origin meaning "will or resolve" and "helmet."

First Generation

1. John Gilliam [23061] was born about 1588 in Twickenham, Middlesex County, England. He married Amy Fountayne.

Children of John Gilliam and Amy Fountayne are:

  1. John Gilliam, born 1614 in Gravesend, Kent County, England; died June 1673 in Charles City County, Virginia or Prince George County, Virginia.
  2. Thomas Gilliam, born 1618.

Research Note: A person named Jo. Gillam, aged 21, and another person named Tho. Gillam, aged 18, left Gravesend on the ship George, of which Jo. Severne was Master, which was bound for Virginia.  They were licensed, with 150 others, by the Minister of Gravesend, on 21 August [1635].  This is from Hotten's Persons, p. 124. Now I have no doubt that the minister of Gravesend (which is a port on the Thames) was licensing anyone who wished to pay as conforming to the religious requirements of Virginia.  Quite possibly none of these 152 people came from Gravesend.  However, it does seem that John and Thomas Gilliam were brothers, the ages are probably very close to actual, and that this provides a valuable clue.  -Carl Boyer
