Jonas Akard
[3807] was born 1792, and died 1840 in Greene County, Missouri. He married
Elizabeth Hopkins about 1811 in Roane County, Tennessee. She was
born 1792 in South Carolina, and died 13 October 1869 in Fair Play, Polk County,
Missouri.
He traveled with the Hopkins family and others first to
Tennessee, then to Illinois, and then to Missouri. While in Tennessee, he served
in the Tennessee Militia during the War of 1812. He enlisted on 30 September
1813 in Captain David Deadrick's Artillery Company. On 28 December 1813 he
transferred to Phillips Company Mounted. He participated in an expedition against the Creek Indians
between 30 September 1813 and 31 March 1814. After his discharge he traveled
to Union County, Illinois with his Hopkins in-laws. By August 1820 he moved to Jackson County, Illinois
where he bought 160 acres of land. By 1822 he returned to Tennessee
and bought 113 acres of land in Henry County from his father-in-law,
Andrew Hopkins. By 1832 he migrated to Greene County,
Missouri where he died without leaving a will. After Jonas died his sons Henry
and Joseph Akard were paid from the estate to return to Tennessee to take care
of Jonas' business there.
Henry Akard became administrator of Jonas Akard's estate on 11 March 1834 and
it was transferred to Polk County when the new county was formed. Henry R. Akard
was principal with Daniel M. Stockton, security and John T. Williams, security
for the amount of $2000. On 5 April 1834 Elizabeth Akert received $150. She was
also a buyer at the sale with Robert Evans, John T. Williams and William
Campbell. Distributions included: Joseph, Henry, and A.M.T. who received $92.62;
Matthew Dunnegan who received $88.12-1/2; and Silas Fox who received $92.62-1/2.
