Family History
The English surname Kendall is toponymic in origin, being derived from the
place the bearer once dwelt. In this case the surname indicates one who resides
"at Kendal" a small market town in Cumbria England. The place name is derived
from "Kent dale" meaning "valley of the river Kent."

First Generation
Edward Kendall
[26758] was born about 1800 in High Point,
Randolph County (now Guilford County), North Carolina, and died about 1868. He
married 1) Nancy Smith about 1821 in North Carolina.
She died about 1849 in Tishomingo County, Mississippi. About 1828 they moved to
Henry County, Tennessee where they remained until about1843 when they moved
south to Fayette County, Tennessee. By 1846 they moved to Tishomingo County,
Mississippi. After Nancy's death Edward move to Obion County, Tennessee and
married Lydia [last name unknown].
Children of Edward Kendall and Lydia/Nancy are:
Meltire Arnold Kendall,
born about 1821 in North Carolina; died between 1870 and 1880 in Arkansas.
Isaac Kendall, born 24 August 1823 in North Carolina; died 17 April 1892
in Arkansas.
- Martha Ann Kendall, born 14 December 1825, North Carolina; died
27 Aug 1885, Burnsville, Tishomingo County, Mississippi; buried in Old
Pleasant Hill Cemetery, Tishomingo County, Mississippi; married Hiram Calvin
Vinson.
- + Robert Smith Kendall, born 8 May 1827 in North Carolina or
Tennessee; died 15
June 1911.
- + Ann Eliza Kendall, born 02 February 1828 in Henry County,

Research Notes: The connection of
Meltire Kendall as the son of Edward Kendall is circumstantial and conjecture
at this point. Meltire arrived in Johnson County, Arkansas about the same time
that Edward arrived in Tishomingo County, Mississippi and Isaac arrived in
Carroll County, Arkansas. Isaac moved to Johnson County, Arkansas at the close
of the Civil War.
