George Horner [1025]
was born 1799 in Tennessee, and died 30 September 1862. He married
his first cousin
Harriet Elizabeth Russell about 1820 in Tennessee. She was born between 1800 and 1805 in Jefferson County, Tennessee,
the daughter of Lewis R. Russell and Georges's aunt Esther Horner. Harriett died
between 1870 and 1880 in Franklin County, Arkansas. They
lived in Perry County, Tennessee in 1830 and in Franklin County, Arkansas in
1840. George was a farmer on the Big Mulberry Creek in Franklin County in
1841. On 4 May 1841 he was a founding member and
the first pastor of the Enon
Primitive Baptist Church in Franklin County. After George's death in
1862 Harriett moved in with her daughter Mary and son-in-law Craven Hamm. She

4.
Spencer Horner
[623]
was born 1807 in Dickson County, Tennessee, and died 02 Aug 1864 in near Catalpa,
Johnson County, Arkansas. He married
Permelia Turner
1828 in Perry County, Tennessee, daughter of JOHN
TURNER
and ISABELL
BISHOP.
She was born 11 Nov 1810 in Maury County, Tennessee, and died 09 Aug 1892 in
Johnson County, Arkansas. In 1834 John Tuner, Permelia's brother, and John
Curry were indicted for mayhem and Spencer Horner, along with Richard Murray
made bond. In 1835 Spencer owned land on the banks of the Buffalo River in
Perry County, Tennessee. In 1836 he migrated to Franklin County, Arkansas. In
1843 he was a squatter on 80 acres of land owned by the Little Rock Railroad
near the present community of Cass in Franklin County, Arkansas. He was
permitted to remain there until the land came up for sale, at which time he
could purchase it or abandon it. No purchase record has been found and the next
land transaction for Spencer was in 1848 for 40 acres in Johnson County (about
15 miles west of Cass). It has been stated that in 1855 he moved to Barry
County, Missouri but returned to Johnson County, Arkansas. No record of the move
to Missouri has been found. He executed another land purchase in Johnson County
in April 1957 for 160 acres of land from Co-Cha-Tubbee, representative of
Cunne-Chubee, a Choctaw Indian, near the present day community of
Ozone.
The Civil War was devastating to the
Horner family. All of Spencer's sons except young James and possibly his eldest, John,
served in the Union Army. Several sons-in-law served the Confederacy. In 1862
son-in-law Jesse Boen, husband of Mary Ann Horner, died only four days after
enlisted in the Confederate Army. Before 1864 daughter Oma passed away. In
March 1864 daughter Elizabeth died in her home of measles. Her husband, Francis
Acord, was away in the Union Army with Spencer's sons. Francis'
sister-in-law, Angeline Cook, wife of Calvin Acord, took in Elizabeth's two
small sons to care for them while Elizabeth was ill. After Elizabeth died,
Spencer went to Angeline's home and took custody of the boys. In July of that
year, Francis succumbed to the measles while in the service, making the boys
orphans. Within a week Spencer's sons Andrew and Pleasant also succumbed to
disease in the service of the Union. After these deaths, son William came home, on
either on leave or AWOL. John had gone out on the mountain to get some horses shod. While the family gathered for
a
chicken dinner bushwhackers approached the house. Spencer went out to talk to them
and they shot him dead in his tracks. William made a break for the woods through
the potato patch but they caught and pistol whipped him. William died 8 days
later. William and Spencer are buried on top of a ceremonial Indian mound on the
farm. William's tombstone inscription reads "Wm. R. Homer Born Aug. 1, 1834 Killed Aug. 10, 1864 by parties
well known to his
family." It is generally believed in the family that one of the Stewarts from Yale was
among these bushwhackers. It may have been Henry Stewart who is buried in the Yale Cemetery.
Family lore states that after Spencer
and William's death, all the buildings and fences were torn down and Permelia
was unable to make
repairs so she sold the property for a chunk of a mare and a old wagon. She loaded up the wagon and was seen leaving
town, perhaps joining some of her family in Webster County, Missouri. It is not likely
that Permelia could legally sell her deceased husband's land. Another account
states that son John Turner Horner organized a wagon train and moved the
remainder of the Horners along with other families to Webster County, Missouri.
Permelia and some of the other Horners returned
after the war. Spencer's estate was settled in 1865, John T. Horner,
administrator. In 1870 Permelia was living with her daughter Sarah and
son-in-law George W. Vaught in
Mulberry Township. Johnson County, Arkansas. In 1879 she filed for federal
pension on behalf of her sons Andrew and Pleasant.
