Third Generation

( WILLIAM2, WILLIAM1)

Children of William Allen and Mary Ann Moore

1. WILLIAM N. ALLEN [2036] was born 2 March 1818 in Madison County, Alabama, and died 21 December 1891 in Johnson County, Arkansas. He married ELIZABETH FRANCES 'BETTY' SCOTT in 1849. She was born 24 October 1832 in Kentucky, and died 2 March 1919 in Johnson County, Arkansas. William was opposed to secession. In February 1862, after Arkansas voted to secede from the Union, William mustered with the 10th Arkansas Militia in Clarksville, Johnson County, Arkansas as required by law. Clarksville was a very dangerous place, especially for Union sympathizers so William sent Elizabeth and their children to Illinois. The militia units were soon disbanded and on 2 September 1863 he enlisted in Company A of the 2nd Arkansas Union Infantry Regiment in Warren, Bradley County, Arkansas at age 43. He filed for a Civil War invalid pension for Union service in 1887 and, after his death, Elizabeth filed for a widows pension. William and Elizabeth are buried in Watson Cemetery, Johnson County, Arkansas.

Children of WILLIAM ALLEN and ELIZABETH SCOTT are:

  1. MARY JANE ALLEN, b. about 1849; m. [first name unknown] MARSH about 1874. They had 9 children 6 of whom were living in 1910. Mar is buried in Hogan Cemetery, Johnson County, Alabama.
  2. WILLIAM A. 'BILL' ALLEN, b. about 1851, Arkansas.
  3. MARTHA MELINDA ALLEN, b. about 1853, Arkansas; d. 1950, Dayton, Walla Walla County, Washington; m. Samuel George Harris.
  4. ALICE A. "ALLIE" ALLEN, b. about 1856, Arkansas.
  5. SUSANNAH ALLEN, b. about 1860, Arkansas; m. JIMMIE WEST and divorced before 1910.
  6. JOHN PATRICK ALLEN, b. about 1863, Arkansas; m. ALONIA WILLIAMS, 27 May 1883, Johnson County, Arkansas.

Research Note: There may be a problem with this family group. The connection to William Allen and Mary Moore is based on what appears to be Mary Moore living in the household in 1880. However William states in that census that both his parents were born in Alabama. The Mary in his household was reported as being born in Tennessee. Some researchers believe that William is the son of Pete Allen. It is possible that William is the product the probable unknown first marriage of Peter Allen.

William and Elizabeth's son William A. Allen does not appear in the 1880 Johnson County census. He may have married Savannah Taylor and moved to Scott County about 1872. Savannah's husband (William A. Allen) presumably passed away before 1880 leaving her with a son named William Andrew Allen, b. 1878. A marriage record has not yet been found to establish this connection.
