Boyles Stephernon, on 20 March 1864, nine days before his uncles Andrew and Pleasant Horner joined the same unit. His uncle Francis Acord joined that unit in 1861. His military papers describe him as being of average size, 5 feet 10 inches tall with black hair and brown eyes. Louis and his uncles all contracted measles at Lewisburg, Arkansas. His uncles all died of the disease but Louis survived. He was discharged on 24 August 1865 at Lewisburg Ridge, Arkansas. He went to Webster County, Missouri with the rest of the family and returned to Johnson County with his mother. He married Jemima Kasiah Melson on 25 June 1866 in Clarksville, Johnson County, Arkansas, daughter of Absolom Patton Melson and Bearbia Melita Uptain. She was born March 1846 in Arkansas. Louis and Jemima moved often. Shortly after his marriage they returned to Greenfield, Missouri then in 1878 to Cassville where his father lived. He applied for an invalid pension for his Civil War service in 1886. Jesse fought for the Union during the Civil War enlisting as a Private in Company A of the 2nd Arkansas Infantry Regiment. He was in the posse that hunted down the bushwhackers who killed Spencer Horner, his father-in-law, and Spencer's son, William Riley Horner. Jesse Wilson didn't know that the war was over; when he found one of the bushwhackers hiding under his woman's skirt; he pulled him out and shot him, saying "The blood-thirsty rascal." William applied for an invalid's pension in 1890.

Mary's mother, Susannah Boen, lived with them, and sat in her little rocker and told them Civil War stories. Mary told how, during the Civil War, bushwhackers pulled the earrings out of her pierced ears because they were gold. She also said that they hung one of the brothers, probably Louis Cass Horner, up on a limb and burned his feet to make him tell where the family treasures were hid. Mary was an excellent nurse. Although not formally trained, she had worked by her father's side before the war. She was fearless, and would close the eyes of those who died, no matter where or who they were. She continued nursing after she married, and people called on her whenever someone was sick. After William's death Mary applied for a widow's pension in 1929.
