Three Stuart brothers moved to America in the early 1700's. All fought in the Revolutionary War. After the war one of the brothers went to New York and "got into the wrong crowd and became a gambler." The other two brothers were Baptist Preachers. The two brothers moved from Virginia to North Carolina and to sever all ties with the erring brother, took the English spelling of their name of Stewart. Part of the descendants used the Scotch spelling of Stuart, others born after the spelling change, used the English spelling of Stewart. When Christopher Columbus Stewart moved to Texas in 1890, he bought a new Bible printed in 1891 and wrote ALL the family names in it spelled with the Scotch spelling of STUART. The two youngest were born after the spelling change. Christopher Columbus had a brother and three sisters, and all spell the name STEWART. Frances Marie Acord Stewart/Stuart is the only Acord involved in the spelling mix-up.
