Fourth
Generation
(
FRANCIS MARION3,
JOHN2,
CORNELIUS1)
Children of Francis Acord and
Elizabeth Turner
1.
John Samuel Acord
[4216]
was born 1 December 1856 in Friley, Johnson County, Arkansas, and died 20 March 1928
in Clarksville, Johnson County, Arkansas. John was orphaned during the Civil
War. He father died of disease while in the service of the Union Army and his
mother died within a few months in Friley, Johnson County, Arkansas. John and
his brother were taken to the home of their Uncle Calvin Acord by there Aunt Angeline. Their grandfather, Spencer Horner, came and took the boys to his home
near the current town of Ozone, Johnson County, Arkansas. Almost as soon as they
arrived at their grandfather home, Spencer was killed by bushwhackers. Their
Uncle John T. Horner then moved the family to Missouri. John assumed
guardianship of the orphans and filed for a Federal Pension on their behalf on 7
September 1865. It is not clear if he was ever legally named their guardian.
After the war was over some of the Horner family returned to Arkansas, bringing
John and his brother with them. John's grandfather, John Acord, died in 1866 and
when his estate was settled in 1867 John's Uncle Calvin was named guardian of
the boys. He was raised in his Uncle Calvin's home. He married Amanda C.

Joseph
Hill
and Emeline Jones.
She was born 5 August 1859 in Yale, Johnson County, Arkansas, and died 26 April 1937
in Yale, Johnson County, Arkansas. John was a farmer. In June 1900 his cousin
Mary Newton Acord, daughter of Thomas Newton B. Acord and Martha Loretta Kozier,
lived with them in Johnson County. After John passed away Amanda moved to Dyer,
Crawford County, Arkansas where she lived with her son Robert. John and Amanda are buried in Kendall

Research Notes:
There are a number of difficulties in the record for this family group. In the
1900 Johnson County, Arkansas Census, it is stated that John and Amanda had been
married for 25 years, had 10 children and only 7 of those were living. There
are seven children listed in the household and Charles Perry is found as a
servant in the Jasper Hill household . Missing are, Melinda Mary Jane (who may
have left the county with her husband by 1900), Emeline (who may have died
before 1900) , Julia Ann , Joseph Marion (who may have moved to Oklahoma with
his wife by 1900), Dorsey, Eugene Marcus, and Lular Francis. They may have
misunderstood the question and stated how many children were living WITH them.
That still does not account for the discrepancy in the number of children (10
versus 16). Melinda Mary Jane, Julia Ann, Emeline and John Marion are listed in
the 1880 Johnson County, Arkansas census. That brings the total documented
children born to this couple to 11 by June 1900. The last child, Rosie, was born
after the 1900 census. It also appears that James T. and Eugene Marcus are
either the same person or Eugene is not a child of John and Amanda. Dorsey may
be incorrect. The 1910 census is blurred but the total number of children
appears to be 10, but could be 16. Surviving children of Rosa insist that the correct number of
children is 15.
