Children of William Acord and

1.
SARAH
CAROLINE
ACORD
[980] was born 14 January 1855 in Friley, Johnson County, Arkansas. She married NICHOLAS
BISHOP
GRAY on
11 July 1870. He was born 11 July 1845 in Johnson County, Arkansas. At the time of
the 1870 Johnson County Census, they were living with her mother. They lived in Johnson
County until about 1886, then moved to Healdton, Indian Territory, Oklahoma (now Carter
County). Their son, Jesse, was small and his mother covered his face with a handkerchief to protect him from the hot sun and wind. The handkerchief became a favorite keepsake of this long and dangerous trip.
Nicholas was a stockman in 1900. They moved to Ardmore,
Oklahoma where they separated and divorced. Sarah bought a small farm southwest of Ardmore and raised her children there. She lived on the farm until her death. Her granddaughter, Mary Florence, was sleeping with her and tried to wake her in the morning. Clara (Gray) Flippin
discovered her mother had died peacefully in her sleep. After the divorce,
Nicholas moved to Fort Worth, Tarrant County, Texas and remarried shortly before
his death. Sarah died 13 May 1924 in Littlefield, Lamb County, Texas.

3.
WILLIAM
COLUMBUS
'BIG CLUM'
ACORD
[695] was born 13 March 1859 in Johnson County, Arkansas, and died 20 June 1933 in
Wagoner, Wagoner County, Oklahoma. He married (1) ELMINA
CAROLINE
WHITMIRE about 1880 in Hull County, Georgia. She was born about 1857 in Georgia, and died
October 1885 in Mulberry, Johnson County, Arkansas. He married (2) CORDELIA
DOUGLAS
WALKER
about 11 January 1895 in Indian Territory, Oklahoma. She was born 29 June 1873 in
Dallas, Dallas County, Texas, and died 2 March 1946 in Wagoner, Wagoner County,
Oklahoma. Cordelia was part Cherokee Indian and was born, along with a twin
sister, Alice, on a wagon train while passing through Dallas, Texas. Her parents
died when she was young, one when she was a few months old and the other when
she was six or seven years old. When asked where she lived after he parents died
she said, "Oh, just kicked from pillar to post." She did not know the names of
her parents. Apparently her mother had been married previously, as she had
older sister and brothers with surname of Williams – Ebb and Tom and Eliza.
Cordelia was a small woman, not more than 4 feet 11 inches tall, very tiny, slim
and fine boned. She had brown hair as a young woman, and had sparkly brown eyes
and high cheekbones. She always wore her hair in a bun on the back of her head
until her later years. She pieced beautiful quilts, carded and spun her own yarn
on a spinning wheel, and knitted all the family socks. She grew a big garden,
preserving all she could for the family food, plus picking wild blackberries for
cobblers and pies. She worked with her children cutting and splitting wood with
a buck saw to sell, doing the farm work as well, when William was sick with
heart trouble, unable to work. She was an immaculate homemaker, scrubbed her
floors until they were white with lye water. She had a quiet, sweet nature.
Everyone who knew her loved and appreciated her kindness and generosity.

very handsome man" said his niece, Chloe (Weatherby) Johnson. John Turner believed in the teachings of the Bible students known as
"Russellites" or "Jehovah's Witnesses". Of his family, one grandson, Will Dennis was to follow his beliefs so he left his Bible and theology book to that grandson.
John was a farmer and owned 123 acres of farm and timerland land on Little Mulberry Creek in Johnson
County, north of "Acord Hollow" where most of the Acords lived. John and Sarah
are buried in Oark Creek Cemetery, Oark, Johnson County, Arkansas.
