Third Generation

( NATHANIEL2, WILLIAM1)

Children of Nathaniel Allen and Penelope Williams

1. William Allen [14024] was born about 1810 in Louisiana, and died 13 April 1868 in Jasper County, Texas. He left Louisiana with his father and siblings and settled in the Bevil District before 1835. He served in the Texas Revolution under 2nd Lt. Chesser at the Siege of Bexar. There he married (1) Ann Mitchell Grigsby on 25 February 1836 in Texas, daughter of Joseph D. Grigsby and Sally Graham. She was born 2 January 1819 in Daviess County, Kentucky. After his marriage he was awarded a land grant in Jasper County. William was elected Justice of the Peace for Beat 5, Walnut Run in June 1839 and apparently served one two-year term. He was again elected Justice of the Peace for Precinct 4 for two consecutive terms beginning in July 1843. Ann died 27 October 1863 in Jasper County, Texas and is buried in the Allen Family Cemetery in Jasper County.  William then married (2) Frances Harriett Thomason on 26 January 1865 in Jasper County, Texas, daughter of Moses Thomason and Thryza Campbell and widow of William H. Grigsby, his first wife's brother. She was born 21 March 1837 in Mississippi, and died 27 February 1865 in Jasper, Jasper County, Texas, just one month after the marriage. Harriett is buried in Holton Cemetery, Jasper County and William is buried in the Allen Family Cemetery in Jasper County.

Research Notes: The 1850 Jasper County Census states that William and Ann's children were born in Kentucky. This was an error by the census taker. All their children were born in Texas as indicated by later census records.

2. Delilah Allen [14023] was born 22 October 1811 in Louisiana, and died 13 August 1811. She married (1) Larkin Wales on 28 August 1828 at the age of 17 in St. Helena Parish, Louisiana. He was born 7 February 1808 in Kentucky, and died 13 Aug 1884. It appears that they divorced and she returned to her parents' home in St, Helena Parish, Louisiana. She then married (2) Robert Conn on 23 July 1830 at the home of her Uncle Michael Dailey. He was born about 1800 in South Carolina, and died after 1835. They  they separated in 1831. She and daughter Penelope migrated to Texas with her father in 1834. She married (3) Daniel Chesser after 1835. He was born about 1809.

Research Notes: Delilah Allen marry a Larkin Wales in St. Helena Parish on 28 Aug 1828. Larkin Wales of St. Helena Parish married Rebecca A. Fletcher on 22 Sep 1834 in St. Helena Parish. This would seem to indicate that Larkin and Delilah divorced. Larkin and Rebecca are found in subsequent St. Helena Parish census records with a large number of children, all born after their marriage. They are both buried in Wales Cemetery, St. Helena Parish. It is believed that Delilah then married Robert Conn on 23 Jul 1830 but no record to support this fact has been found. Delilah is found living with her father in Bevil District, Texas in 1835 along with 4-year old Penelope Conn. Delilah is listed as a widow, but a Robert Conn  is living alone and is listed as a widower in the same census. It is believed that Delilah then married Daniel Chesser/Chessher about 1835. There is a Daniel Chessher, age 22, listed as single in the same census.

An interesting family story was related by Andy Anderson. He states that according to family lore Delilah's first born was John/Jerry Allen and that his father was an overseer on a plantation in Louisiana. This child lived in Louisiana and frequently told the story that his father, an Indian, was killed by Delilah's father, Nathaniel. Delilah then went to Texas with her father. No records have been found to substantiate any of this story but, if true, it may have been the cause of the divorce of Delilah and Larkin and may have prompted Nathaniel to remove to Texas. Of course, Jerry's father may have been Larkin Wales and Jerry may have just been told that his real father was dead when he was actually still alive. Family lore also states that Jerry may have been raised by his aunt Mollie Allen who was married to a doctor. Delilah had a sister name Mary (Mollie?) who married William Rollins. They are found in the 1850 Rapides Parish, Louisiana census.
