Children
of Peter Allen and Sarah Ring
1. William Allen [927] was born 20
August 1838 in Hartman, Johnson County, Arkansas, the son of
Peter Allen and Sarah Ring. In 1880, his sisters Nancy Emeline Allena and
Mary Hogins (widow of Archibald Hogins) lived with him. He married
Bethena
Celia Kendall on 7 July 1880 in Johnson County.
Bethena was born 24 February 1857 in Hartman, Johnson County, Arkansas, the daughter of
Meltire Arnold Kendall and Susannah Gilliam. William established a large
farm in Hartman along the banks of the Arkansas River. It is not
clear if this is the same property owned by his father.
When he died 2 February
1899 in Johnson County he left Bethena with eight children, ranging in ages from
one to eighteen years old, to raise alone. Lee was old enough to take over
the operation of the farm in Hartman. Bethena never remarried. William left
portions of his farm to each of his children. In 1910 Lillian, Anna,
Seth, Alice, Augustus and Claudia were all still living at home with their
mother. In 1917 Bethena moved to Stigler,
Haskell County, Oklahoma with her daughter Lillian, son Augustus and aunt Mary
Gilliam to live near her daughter Anna 'Annie' Shropshire. There she died on 9 October 1921. William and Bethena are buried in Kendall Cemetery,
Johnson County, Arkansas.

1917 when she moved to Stigler, Haskell County, Oklahoma to
live with her daughter Anna 'Annie' Shropshire. There
she died on 9 October 1921 and was buried in Kendall Cemetery
with her husband. The children inherited the farm. Clara, Anna,
Alice and Claudia all sold their portion of the farm but retained
the mineral rights. Descendants are still collecting lease
payments for those rights. Lillian kept her portion of the farm
but was forced to sell to the Government when the Arkansas River
Navigation System was constructed. That land is now underwater.
Lee and Seth stayed and continued to work there portion of the
farm.
