Lafayette 'Fate' Hill
[1928] was born 15 June 1855 in Arkansas, and
died 4 March 1919. He married (1) Sarah C. Acord about 1871 in Roane
County, Tennessee, daughter of Cornelius Acord and Ann Murray. She was born
September 1850 in Roane County, Tennessee, and died in Arkansas.
Sarah and Fate had a rocky relationship. By 1880 they had two children, William
Thomas and Charles, but were living apart. She was head of her household and
lived with her children. Apparently she was so miffed that she refused to
identify the children's father to the census taker. The 1880 Johnson County
census she has reverted to her maiden name and has "Grass Widow" in the
Married/Single column, indicating that she was divorced. Her children are listed
with the surname Acord and the father's birthplace is blank. At that time, Fate
had moved back into his father's house. Things must have cooled down a bit as
Sarah had two more children, Mary Jane and John F. in 1885 and 1887, presumably
with Fate. That didn't last as Fate married the younger Sarah C. Stewart about
1888. In the 1900 Johnson County census Sarah again is used her maiden name and
refused to identify the father and the children, who are again listed with the
surname Acord. This time Fate's birthplace is listed.
He
married (2) Sarah C. Stewart after 1887, daughter of Joseph Stewart and Belvaritta
Casey. She was born November 1866 in Arkansas. Fate is buried in Yale Cemetery,
