After closing hours this bank would permit the army commissioned officers do their personal banking. Captain Lewis J. Whisler planned a robbery knowing that there would be 5 men in the bank to eliminate. The bank President, Kearney Wornall, was forced to tie and gag the other four men, which included John Jewell, Editor of Camp Funston News Paper. Wornall was the first victim, and about eleven o'clock at night he was found on the outside of the bank crawling around. The camp commander said the investigation showed the four men were tied hand and feet and gagged with their handkerchiefs and they found an Army hatchet which without question was the murder weapon; and checking with the Camp Quartermaster Department showed that Capt. Whisler had signed for the hatchet. After an interview with the following day Capt Whisler killed himself  after leaving a suicide note. A search of his quarters turned up $62,800 dollars of the bank money. The Bank employees were Kearney Wornall of Kansas City Bank President, who was badly wounded, but did recover, Obed N.
