Second Generation
( EDWARD1)

Children of Edward Kendall

1. Meltire Arnold Kendall [1326] was born about 1821 in North Carolina, and died between 1870 and 1880 in Arkansas. His is believed to have arrived in Arkansas between 1843 and 1846. He married (1) Judith Zachary, the daughter of Bartholomew 'Bartlett' Zachary and Polly Bruce, about 1845. She had been previously married to Calvin Fielding on 5 October 1837 in Hempstead County, Arkansas and had three children by that marriage (James A.B., John J., and Elizabeth Fielding). Judith was born 22 April 1811 in Missouri, died 21 December 1851, and is buried in Kendall Cemetery, Johnson County, Arkansas. Meltire and Judith purchased land in Fannin County, Texas in 1849 from John and Cinthia Zachary. He married (2) Susannah J. Gilliam on 13 February 1856 in Johnson County, Arkansas, daughter of Thomas Edmond Gilliam and Celia Hardgrave. She was born 3 August 1827 in Davidson County, Tennessee, and died at the age of 84 on16 February 1912 at her home near Smeadley in Johnson County, Arkansas. Meltire mustered with the 10th Arkansas Militia in Clarksville, Arkansas in February 1862 as required by law. The militia was disbanded without seeing action and no record has been found to indicate that Meltire enlisted in a regular military unit. Meltire was a member of the Spring Hill Masonic Lodge. During the Civil War the lodge disbanded and all records were lost. In September 1865 members of the lodge reassembled. Because there were no records to determine the names and status of members, membership and status was constructed from memory. Susannah's sister Mary lived with them from about 1870 until Susanna's death in 1912. In 1910 Susannah's daughter Mary Hardena lived with her in Horsehead Township, Johnson County. Susannah is buried in Mount Arnat Church Cemetery in Johnson County.
