Sixth Generation

[ JOHAN JACOB5, GREGORIUS4, HANS HEINRICH3, JORG2, MARTI1]

Children of Johan Jacob Frey and Anna Schaub

4. JOHAN PETER FREY [11080] was born 1689 in Wingen, Alsace (now Bas-Rhin, France), and died 4 May 1766 in Friedberg, Davidson County, North Carolina. He married ANNA BARBARA SCHMIDT on 18 February 1715/16, daughter of JOHAN THEOBALD SCHMIDT and ANNA SCHLAEBERIN. She was born 5 April 1696 in Wingen, Alsace, France, and died 9 January 1768 in Bethany, Davidson County, North Carolina. They immigrated to America in 1733 on the Ship Samuel, and settled first in East Cocalico township, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, later moving with most of their children to Heidelberg township, Berks County, Pennsylvania. Their sons Peter and Christian moved to North Carolina in the 1750s, and in May 1765 Peter Sr. and the rest of his family joined them. He died the following year and was the first person interred in the new graveyard at Friedberg Moravian church. Anna Barbara died 09 January 1768 in Bethany, Davidson County, North Carolina and is buried at Bethania Moravian church.

Three of Johan Peter Frey's sons seemingly failed to choose the side of liberty during the War of Independence. The Rowan County, North Carolina, Court Minutes of the year 1778 listed 577 persons who "refused or neglected" to take the Oath of Allegiance to the State. Most of these, we may safely assume, were Loyalists and/or Tories--that is, they were loyal, either passively or actively, to England, rather than to North Carolina or the United States. Roughly, out of around 3,000 families in the Rowan County area in 1778, one out of five were Loyalists/Tories. In 1778 Rowan County included the present-day counties of Rowan, Davidson, and Davie. In Captain Eakles District of Nonjurors listed the following names: "George Fry, Christian Fry and Peter Fry, Ser."
