3. Martha Melinda Allen [6150] was born about 1853 in Arkansas, and died 1950 in Dayton, Walla Walla County, Washington. She married Sanuel George Harris1872 in Arkansas, son of Samuel and Paralee Harris. He was born 16 September 1852 in Arkansas, and died after 16 March 1930 in Dayton, Walla Walla County, Washington.

Children of Martha Allen and Samuel Harris are:

  1. Archie Harris, born 14 August 1873, Arkansas.

6. John Patrick Allen [171] was born 14 October 1862 in Harmony, Johnson County, Arkansas and died 22 May 1946 in Long Creek, Grant County, Oregon. He married Alonia Alice Williams on 27 May 1883 in Johnson County, Arkansas. She was born 17 June 1866 in Missouri and died 27 December 1948 in the home of her daughter at in Prineville, Oregon. In 1885 the set out for the west. Alonia was pregnant for with their second child when John announced that they were moving west. Before leaving they visited both families but did not tell them about the move. They loaded their household into a wagon, hitched it to an ox, and started west. The country was still wild, sparsely settled, and had unfriendly Indians. The first several nights they camped without fire. Presently they came to the town of Muskogee in Oklahoma where their second son, Jesse, was born. John had to get an Indian doctor to attend Alonia as the white doctor didn't think they would be able to pay him. Jesse got a lot of attention from the Indian ladies as they had not seen many white babies. They stayed there for a short time to recoup their finances then continued by train to San Francisco. From there they traveled by boat to Portland, Oregon. There they transferring to a smaller boat and made their way upriver to Umatilla Landing, Oregon. They stopped at Heppner, Oregon a short time and then moved by wagon to Long Creek, Grant County, Oregon in July of 1885, where they made their home for the rest of their lives. When they first arrived in Long Creek, Alonia and John drove right past his sister Martha, not recognizing her. According to neighbor Calvin von Weissenflug...

"I remember them well. They lived just a half mile up the hill from us while we lived in the old Harper house. She was obviously a lovely young woman. He was an old Arkansas coon hunter. Always went to bed about 6:00 PM and got up at 2:00 AM. During the winter months he would have a small fire in the heater stove, sit up close, drink coffee and spit into a coffee can which he used as a spittoon. I have no notion as to what thoughts he had, but they must have been many as he sat there alone in the darkness.

He bought his chewing tobacco in 'plugs'. A plug had ten 'cuts' and a cut measured about two inches by three inches by a half inch. Shirt pocket sized. I didn't see this, but the story was that whenever he bought a new plug he would lay one cut on the warmer oven in the kitchen for Alonia.

One of my great grandmothers (Blackwell side) smoked a pipe. Tobacco use by women was commonplace in those days. They were quite discreet about it though. You never saw them do it and it wasn't talked about.

I also remember when Richard died. Herbert was teaching at the Carter School and someone came by the school to tell him that Richard had disappeared from the house and that a gun was also missing. Herbert shut down the school for the day and immediately went home. The story that went around at the time was his death was by suicide. I wonder, though, about the date. You noted 1930. My estimate would have been that it was a year or so later than that. I was in the second grade at Carter School in 1930-1931 and I think I was a bit older than seven when he died."
