James Hunter Horner
[25001] was born 3 April 1822 in near Flat
River at Red Mountain, Orange County, North Carolina, (now Rougemont, Durham
County) and
died 13 June 1892. James was tutored by John Chavis, the noted free black
preacher and teacher of many of North Carolina's most prominent men. He graduated from the University of North Carolina in 1844 and
taught school in Florida and eastern North Carolina for a few years. He married Sophronia Moore about 17 September 1850 in Person
County, North Carolina. Surety was provided by L. B. Norwood, bond #107906. She
was born about 1830 in North Carolina. In 1851 James founded and became the
principal of the Horner School
in Oxford, Granville County, North Carolina. He taught there from 1851 till his
death in 1892. On 5 Jun 1861 James was elected captain of Company E (Granville Targeteers),
23rd Regiment, North Carolina Infantry, which arrived in Virginia just after the
Battle of Manassas. They spent the summer and winter camped near Fairfax
Station. About 16 April 1862 he was defeated for reelection as captain, resigned
and returned home to resume teaching. He seems to have had a very successful
theory of teaching the English language, and his school was reputed to be the
best preparatory school in the state at that time. The course of instruction at
the Horner School was thorough, embracing the classical, mathematical,
scientific and military features. Each course was arranged for four years. The
classical course embraced the studies in the schools of Latin, Greek,
Mathematics, English Grammar and Rhetoric, Geography and History. The Scientific
and English course embraced Mathematics, Natural Science, Metaphysics, English
Grammar and Rhetoric, Geography, and History. Many students of the Horner School
went on to be prominent citizens of North Carolina. The school moved to
Hillsborough for a short time but moved back to Oxford in 1876. Military
features were introduced in 1880 and it became the Horner Military School. At
that time James was a Professor of Latin at the school and his son Jerome was
the Principal. The customary M.A. degree was bestowed on him by the University
of North Carolina, as it was upon most graduates who entered one of the
professions. In 1891 he was also honored with an LL.D. degree. Over the years, he turned down several
opportunities to join the faculty at the University of North Carolina but he did
lecture there in the summer of 1879, the first summer school in the country. He
was also a trustee on the university from 1885 to 1892. He served many years as
a vestryman in the St. Stephen's Episcopal Church in Oxford and the church tower
there, erected in 1904, is a tribute to him. A number of members of this family
are buried in the Horner Family Cemetery in Mangum Township, Durham County,
North Carolina. The cemetery is abandoned and grave are marked only by field
stones.
