Children of Joseph Evans and Susanna Griffiths

1. Mary J. Evans [1348] was born 15 October 1877 in Doyleston, Wayne County, Ohio, and died 22 April 1936 in Clarksville, Johnson County, Arkansas. She married Wiley Lee Harris on 15 October 1901 in Johnson County, Arkansas. He was the son of Nathaniel Evans Harris and Rebecca J. Blaylock. He was born 29 February 1876 in Arkansas, and died 15 July 1939 in Patterson Springs, Johnson County, Arkansas. Wiley was a professional photography and learned the trade from his mother. Between 1910 and 1920 they moved to Walthill, Thurston County, Nebraska on the Omaha Indian Reservation where Wiley worked as a real estate agent. At some point they moved back to Johnson County. Mary had a stroke six weeks prior to her death but was thought to be recovering. Her son Joe was visiting from his home in Walthill, Nebraska when he discovered her dead in her bed. She had been actively involved in civic and social work for many years and was a Practical Nurse and the chairman of the Johnson County Chapter of the American Red Cross before her death. Both Mary and Wiley are buried in Oakland Cemetery, Clarksville, Johnson County, Arkansas. The following appeared in the Clarksville Democrat newspaper...

September 19th, 1912 - Local Mention
"Mrs. Wiley Harris and son are visiting in Ft. Smith and Wister Okla. this week."

January 16th, 1913 - Local Mention
"Mrs. Wiley Harris entertained a number of friends last Friday afternoon at her home on East End."

February 6th, 1941 - Service for Mrs. Harris Conducted Tuesday
"    Funeral Services were held Tuesday at 2:30 p. m. at the First Methodist church for Mrs. Rebecca Harris, 84 years old, who died Sunday at the home of her son Dan Harris of Fort Smith. Rev. Guy C. Ames, pastor, officiated. He was assisted by Rev. James T. Draper, pastor of the First Baptist church.
    Burial was at Oakland cemetery with the Eastern Star chapter officiating at the grave. Pall bearers were: Active, Charles Moore, S. L. Reed, R. B. Farris, H. C. Kendall, Hence Manley, and Horace LaGasse; honorary, J. E. Nichols, F. B. White, J. S. Kold, W. N. Cunningham, Elmo Foulke and W. N. Pyron."

  1. Joseph Evans 'Joe' Harris, born 31 March 1903, Arkansas, died April 1975, Wyandotte, Wayne County, Michigan. Married Leota S. [last name unknown[ about 1922 in Nebraska. She was born about 1902 in Nebraska. Lived in Thurston County, Nebraska in 1936.

2. Elizabeth T. 'Lizzie/Suzzie' Evans [1349] was born 15 April 1881 in Arkansas, and died 15 November 1965. She married William N. Cunningham, son of William and Catherine Cunningham, on 12 June 1902 in Johnson County, Arkansas. He was born 22 July 1876, and died 16 February 1961. In 1935 they lived in Clarksville. William was a blacksmith. The following appeared in the Clarksville Democrat newspaper...

  2. Susan 'Suzie' Cunningham, born about 1905, Arkansas, twin, Very tiny wearing child's size 13 shoes. High School teacher, Clarksville High School.

  3. Charles Cunningham, born about 1905, Arkansas, twin, over six feet tall.

2. Martha Ann Evans [1350] was born 10 January 1884 in Arkansas and died 15 January 1961, probably in Johnson County. She married Charles Leon Moore, son of Seaborn and Celia Moore, on 25 April 1907 in Johnson County. He was born 21 August 1881 in Maqouketa, Jackson County, Iowa and died 11 March 1952, probably in Johnson County. He was a bricklayer. Between 1918 and 1930 they moved from Clarksville to Little Rock, Pulaski County, Arkansas. They returned to Clarksville by June 1944 where Charles worked for Martha's cousin Gomer Kraus on the Ozark Packing Company new plant construction project for $1.50 an hour.  They are both buried in Oakland Cemetery, Johnson County.

4. Maude G. Evans [1351] was born 4 January 1891 in Arkansas, and died September 1983 in Arkansas. She worked as a saleswoman in a dry goods store prior to her marriage. She married Gordon W. Marlar, son of William S. Marlar and Lofa Wortham, on 16 November 1910 in Johnson County, Arkansas. He was born 8 February 1887 in Rosston, Nevada County, Arkansas, and died 25 November 1934 in Clarksville, Johnson County, Arkansas. His father died when he was 17 years old and he took over his father's grocery business in Clarksville, Johnson County. His mother died two years later and at the age of 19 he took responsibility for his brothers and sisters. Between 1910 and 1920 they moved to Little Rock, Pulaski County, Arkansas where he worked as a commercial trader. The following newspapers articles appeared in the Clarksville Democrat newspaper..

November 16th, 1942 - Commissioned, Lt. Jane Marlar
"    Miss Jane Marlar, daughter of Mrs. Maude Marlar, 815 Marshal street, Little Rock, formerly of Clarksville, is the first Johnson county girl to enter any branch of the service.
    Jane enlisted as a nurse and was commissioned Second Lieutenant at Camp Barkley, Tex., following graduation from St. Vincent's hospital in Little Rock in June. Until August, Lt. Marlar did private nursing at the hospital.
    Lt. Marlar is well known in Clarksville where she graduated from the Clarksville high school and where she has a number of relatives. She has a twin brother, Jack, who is a corporal in the infantry, stationed at Camp Adair, Oregon."
