2.
George William
Kraus [1289]
was born 3 October 1832 in Huntington County, Pennsylvania. He married
Mary Ann Haus about 1857, probably in
Union County, Pennsylvania. Mary was born
12 March 1838 in Pennsylvania, the daughter of Benjamin and Mary Haus. George served in
the Union Army during the Civil War; enlisting in Company E of the 3rd
Pennsylvania Infantry
Regiment on 11 September 1861. At the time of his enlistment he
lived in Juniata County, Pennsylvania. He was discharged in
September 1862. Between his discharge and 1865 George and his family migrated to
Logansport Cass County, Indiana and George took up farming. Then between 1873 and 1876 they migrated to Illinois and then to
Johnson County, Arkansas, arriving on 30 September 1879. It appears
that his younger brother Edward may have passed through Arkansas as early
as 1871. Perhaps Edward convinced George to move there after Clarksville
had recovered from the ravages of the Civil War. George started a farm
just north of Clarksville. About the same time John Tolbert arrived from
Georgia with a Elberta peach seeds and started an orchard next to George's
farm. Most farmers in the area felt that late frosts in the area would kill
peach crops. John convinced George to establish an orchard. These orchards
were very successful and the famous Johnson County peach industry was
born. George's father was in
their household in 1880. George died
24 April 1888, just one month after his father, in
Johnson County, Arkansas. In 1900 Mary was living with her son Samuel in
Clarksville, Johnson County, Arkansas. She died on 24 August 1913. They are both buried in the
Kraus plot in Oakland Cemetery in Clarksville, Arkansas. The following
appeared in the Clarksville Democrat newspaper...

Research Notes:
There is a problem in the census record. The 1850 Juniata County Census appears
to list Jacob's second son as W.J. Kraus, 17 years old, born in Pennsylvania.
The age matches George's known birth date. It
is possible that the census taker was told W.G. and wrote W.J. George is
listed as William in the 1860 census.
4.
Emily E. Kraus
[1547] was born about 1839 in Huntingdon
County, Pennsylvania, and died before 1870. She married John Hare of
Perry County, Pennsylvania on 12 Aug 1856 in Juniata County, Pennsylvania. Emily
lived in Milford Township, Juniata County, Pennsylvania at their marriage. Apparently
John died before 1860 as Emily had moved back into her parent's home along with
her son Jacob. She worked as a weaver in 1860. In 1870 Jacob Hare
still lived with his grandparents in Logansport, Cass County, Indiana.
Child of Emily Kraus and John Hare is:
- Jacob R. Hare, born about 1857 in Pennsylvania.

4.
Edward
Henry Kraus
[1299]
was born 13 June 1842 in Cambria County, Pennsylvania, and died
15 August 1910 in Johnson County, Arkansas. Edward's whereabouts in 1860 are unknown. He served the Union during the Civil War
while living in Juniata County, Pennsylvania. He enlisted in Company B of the
202nd Pennsylvania Infantry on 2 September 1864 and
mustered
out with the company 3 August 1865. Most of his service was spent guarding
rail services in northern Virginia. After the Civil War he migrated to Logansport, Cass County,
Indiana with his father and brother George. There he took the
trade of carpenter and married 1) Martha C. Patten, the daughter of
John W. Patten and Sarah Colville, on 8 May 1867
in Logansport, Cass County, Indiana. She was born 18 August 1845 in Preble
County, Ohio and died 30 July 1905.
Martha's brothers William and
Richard Patten and her sister Ann Maria Patten, wife of Franklin
Stumbaugh, left Cass County about 1869 traveling through Missouri and
settling in Johnson County, Arkansas. They were brick makers. In 1870
Edward and Martha lived with her parents in Logansport. In 1871 they followed the
William and Richard Patten to Arkansas where
their son Jasper was born in November. Johnson County was a dangerous a
impoverished region at that time and must not have suited Edward and
Martha. They moved on to Kansas (probably Mitchell County) where in 1873 their daughter Ada was
born. In the late 1870s the period of lawlessness that prevailed after the
Civil War had ended and Clarksville was once again thriving,
reconstruction had begun. Richard and William Patten were brick makers and business must have been good.
This may have enticed Edward to return by
September 1878 when daughter Millie was born. In September
1879 Edward's brother George and father Jacob arrived in Johnson County. As a carpenter, Edward may have seen a good
business opportunity in the reconstruction of the town and may have convinced his
brother and father to join him there. Edward's nephew, Edward son of George
later became a brick maker, perhaps learning the trade from his uncle and
the Patttens. In 1891 Edward filed for a Civil War pension as an
invalid.
After Martha's death Edward
married 2) Mary J. Commer on 28 September 1908 in Johnson County. Both Edward and Martha are buried in Annie's Chapel Cemetery, Johnson
County, Arkansas.
Children of Edward
Kraus
and Martha Patton are:
-
Wesley Milton Kraus, born March 1868,

Research Notes: In 1880 a nephew, J. S. Kraus, born about 1858 in Pennsylvania was living
in the household. J.S. Is Jacob S. 'Jake Kraus'. His father, who died when Jake
was young, has not been identified. His mother, Amelia [last name unknown],
remarried to Joseph F. Hogentogler about 1870 and lived in Cass County, Indiana. Edward filed for a pension for his Civil War service as
an invalid on 8 September 1891. In 1900, another nephew,
Richard Patten, born May 1879 in Arkansas was living in the household. Richard's
father was born in Ohio and his mother was born in Indiana. Richard has not been
identified. In 1900, a grandson,
Albert Kraus, born January 1900 in Arkansas was living in the household.
Albert's mother was born in Kansas and the father's birthplace is blank, possibly
indicating a birth out of wedlock. Albert is believed to be Albert Norman Kraus who is listed
as a son in the 1910 census.
13. Sarah
Rebecca D. Kraus [1468] was born
29 March 1849 in Juniata County, Pennsylvania . She married [first name unknown]
Ginithan about 1864. In 1870 she and her daughter were living with her father in
Logansport, Cass County, Indiana. Just three years later, on 26 June 1873, she
died in Logansport just shy of her 24th birthday, Sarah is buried in Mount Hope
Cemetery, Cass County, Indiana.
