16th Arkansas Infantry Regiment, CSA
16th Infantry Regiment completed its organization at Rogers, Benton County,
Arkansas, in November, 1861, then moved to Elm Springs and remained there until
February, 1862. Its members were recruited in the counties of Johnson, Carroll,
Stone, Washington, Pike, Madison, and Searcy. The 16th was involved in the
Battle of Pea Ridge and after the battle had 24 officers and 282 men present for
duty. Ordered east of the Mississippi River, it took an active part in the
conflicts at Iuka
and Corinth where it
reported 13 killed and 29 wounded. Later the unit was assigned to Beall's
Brigade, Department of Mississippi and East Louisiana, and was captured when Port Hudson fell. It
was not reorganized after the exchange. The field officers were Colonels J. F.
Hill and David Provence, Lieutenant Colonels William T. Neal and Benjamin T.
Pixlee, and Majors Samuel Farmer and J. M. Pittman.

Hezekiah Ki Blackard (1843-1913) Private-2nd Lieutenant. Son of
Toliver Goldstone Blackard and Mary Penn, husband of Isabella Wilson. Buried in
Oakland Memorial Cemetery , Clarksville, Johnson County, Arkansas.
James K. Polk Swift (1845-1864) Private. Son of John Dean Swift and
Hardenia Brurnley Clough. Murdered by bushwhackers while at home in Johnson
County, Arkansas on 18 Nov 1864. Buried in Bethlehem Cemetery , Horsehead,
Johnson County, Arkansas.
Company C
John J. Bowman (c1832-1872) Private. Husband of Oma Horner. On 2 September
1863 he enlisted in the Union Army, 2nd Arkansas Infantry Regiment .
John C. Connelly, Captain, buried in Oakland Cemetery , Johnson County,
Arkansas.
Jake Davis, Lieutenant, buried in Oakland Cemetery , Johnson County,
Arkansas.
James P. Yearwood, Lieutenant, buried in Oakland Cemetery , Johnson County,
Arkansas.
Company E
John Fry Hill (1821-1882) Private-Colonel. Son of Mark Hill and Rachel Fry, husband of Emeline T. Cruthers. He was
a veteran of the Mexican War. Enlisted on 29 Oct 1861 at Fayetteville,
Washington County, Arkansas as Captain of Company E for a one year term. By 4
Dec 1861 was promoted to Colonel. After the war he was a tailor and merchant in
Clarksville, Johnson County, Arkansas.
Company G
William T. Neal (??-1964) Private to Lieutenant Colonel. Son of
William Neal and Sinai Harreld.
