History of Benton County
BENTON COUNTY.
page 908
W. B. Winstead, son of James and Elizabeth (Robbins) Winstead, was born in
Hawkins County, Tenn., November 9, 1837. The father was born in the same place
as his son, in 1814, and remained in that county until thirty-seven years of
age, when he removed to White County, Tenn. He here remained until 1856, and
then moved to Neosho County, Kas., and there received his final summons, in
April, 1870. He followed the occupation of a farmer and stock raiser all his
life. The mother was born in East Tennessee, is now living in Kansas, and is
about seventy years of age. They were the parents of eleven children, only four
now living. W. B. Winstead was the third child born in this family. He grew to
manhood on a farm, and when a young man engaged in merchandising near
Springfield, Mo. He went from there to Kansas, where he engaged in the same
business, following this for three years altogether. After this he dealt in
stock five years, and then farmed and dealt in stock in Kansas until 1881, when
he moved to Benton County, Ark., where he has since followed the same
occupation. While living in Kansas he was township trustee for six years. Mr.
Winstead is the owner of 180 acres of land, 120 under cultivation. In 1864 Mr.
Winstead married Miss Mary E. Krouse, a native of Pennsylvania, born in Philadelphia about 1846. Eight children were born to this union: Charles
W., Sarah E., Mary A., Josie F., James W., Bessie G., Martin H. and Henry H.
Politically Mr. Winstead is a Democrat, but has never aspired to office, though
he is regarded as a leading farmer and citizen. He was among the first of the
Northern people in Benton County and helped start the modern plan of farm
cultivation here. He is a Master Mason and a good man. Mrs. Winstead is a member
of the Methodist Episcopal Church.
Notes: Mary E. Krouse may be the daughter of Jacob
Kraus, M.E. in the 1850 Juniata County, Pennsylvania Census. In the 1865
Neosha County, KS State census her birth place is listed as NJ. What
appears to be a relative, C. Crouse born in NY, is next door working as a
farm hand on her father-in-law's farm.
Another potential relative, Wm. Crouse born in Germany is 5 houses down.

"Can Man" Finds Aluminum-Hunting a Galvanizing Endeavor
Pea Ridge, Ark. (AP) -- The Wizard of Oz movie had its Tin Man,
and Pea Ridge has its Can Man. His name is Albert Kraus and you've
probably seen him if you've traveled roads in any direction around the
Benton County town. He's the man with the white Santa Claus beard putt-putting along on his
moped, collecting aluminum cans as he goes out on his almost daily runs.
He has returned home with as few as 42 cans, but he once brought in 840
from a single trip. Once home, Kraus stuffs the cans in plastic sacks. He
adds those sacks to a row piled head-high along one wall of his garage.
When he has a truckload, all are hauled to a recycling center to trade for
cash. Kraus has been picking up aluminum cans for five years. He travels so
many miles and carries such a load on his moped that he has to buy a new
one about once a year, he said in a recent interview. But he explains the
moped he buys is recommended to carry only a 160-pound load, while Kraus
himself weighs 200 pounds -- before adding the weight of the cans and
other items he finds on his trips around the countryside. He's on his
fifth moped now. Reared at Paris in Logan County, he worked at a plant in Buckner,
Mich., for 32 years, but says he vowed that upon retirement he would
return to Arkansas -- and he did. Kraus' wife, Ginny, got him started as a one-man major recycling
project. They live on a narrow county road directly across from the Pea
Ridge National Military Park. One morning she mentioned how many cans she
saw along the way and suggested they pick them up. "I had no idea he
was going to make a career out of it," she said. The couple already
had purchased a moped each to haul in their motor home for transportation
when they arrive at a destination. To embark on his can collection, her
husband just equipped his moped with yellow plastic containers, front and
back, plus some extra trash bags. It's not always a totally lonely
endeavor. If he thinks he will be going far, his wife packs a lunch and
catches up with him on a quiet country road and they share a picnic lunch
together. Not all of the aluminum he gathers are cans. Occasionally, for
instance, he might find a folding aluminum chair that can be taken apart
and added to his collection. Once in a while he finds something else of
value -- one day, a dollar bill in a ditch, another day a coin purse on
the edge of a road, with several dollars in it. And Kraus sometimes finds
full beer cans, including recently a 12-pack of unopened beer in a ditch.
Kraus doesn't drink, so he recycled the beer as fly-trap bait. Most folks refer to Kraus as "the Can Man," so he and Ginny
had a craftsman at a nearby arts and crafts fair make them appropriate
tags for their mopeds. His says, "Al the Can Man" and hers reads
"Wife of the Can Man." 1998: Columbian (Vancouver, WA), Obituaries,
