THE WILLIAM C. ALLEN FAMILY
    William C. Allen was born in 1806 in Roane County, TN. In 1832, he migrated to Washington County AR, travelling by water. In 1842 he relocated southward to Crawford County, AR. He married Nancy Lewis, who was born in Clark County, AR, in 1821. She is the daughter of Hugh Lewis and Nancy _____, early settlers of AR. The Lewis family is of German heritage. Mr. Lewis was a farmer by occupation and died in 1839, his wife having predeceased him ten years earlier.
    William C. Allen and Nancy Lewis were the parents of a large family: Celia E, John M.; James S.; Sarah J.; David F.;Hugh L; and Mary. William C. Allen died in 1881, and Nancy Lewis Allen in 1874.
    John Allen, the grandfather of William C., was native of Virginia and served in the War of 1812, and died in 1818. His wife Celia Oliver Allen was born in Tennessee and died in 1810.
    John M. Allen, the oldest son of William C. Allen and Nancy Lewis was unable to attend school very often, due primarily to unsettled conditions prevailing at the time. In 1870, John began to build a life for himself by farming, after his discharge from the war on 10 June 1865. It was in 1870 that he married Catherine White. She was born in Germany, in 1843 and is the daughter of Maria Beschmann White, who was also born in Germany in 1808. Maria Beschmann White died in 1862. As soon as Maria's husband arrived in America he traveled to Crawford County, AR and began farming. John M. Allen and Catherine White had four children: Nannie E., William Walter, Caroline L., and James W. White.

1819 Biographical Appendix to the History of Robertson County, Tennessee
David M. Allen
, one of Robertson County's old citizens, was born in Humphreys County, Tenn., January 19, 1819, being one of sixteen children born to the union of Benjamin Allen and Annie Lamb. The father, who was of German descent, was born in North Carolina in 1784. During his whole life he followed the pursuit of farming. He died in March, 1856. The mother was also a descendant of German ancestry. She was born in 1766, in North Carolina, and her death occurred in March, 1856, the same month in which the father died. Our subject's youthful days were spent with his parents, he remaining with them till eighteen, receiving his education at Nashville. In January, 1840, he was married to Frances Pope, daughter of John and Frances Pope. Mrs. Allen died in [p.1127] 1880, and our subject then chose and wedded Margaret Hamilton, whose parents were Frank and Kate Hamilton. Mr. Allen's family consists of five children: John, Emma (the wife of J. U. Kimbrough), Jessie, Mary (the wife of J. Wilson), Frank and Anna (the wife of G. Dixon). In 1840 Mr. Allen commenced the wagon-maker's trade in Nashville, and for eighteen years continued in that employment. He then bought 210 acres of land and farmed in Davidson County. In 1860 he went to Arkansas, whence he came back to Tennessee, and in 1864 he settled in Robertson County, where he bought 188 acres, and now follows farming. He is a member of the Democratic party and of the Cumberland Presbyterian Church. He is a worthy citizen of the county.

Judge U. Kimbrough was born in Todd County Ky., April 2, 1848, being one of thirteen children of M. Gart. L. and Mildred (Terry) Kimbrough. The father was of Scotch descent and was born in the same county in which our subject was born. By occupation he was a successful farmer. He lived in his native county many years and then came to Robertson County, Tenn., where his friends were called to mourn his death March 22, 1872. The mother was also born in Todd County, [p.1167] Ky., and died in Montgomery County, Tenn. She died April 1, 1879. Until twenty-one years of age our subject remained with his parents, having received a common school education and also attended Browder Institute in Logan County, Ky. In 1871 he was married to Emma Allen, who was born to the union of David and Frances Allen, in Nashville, October, 1849. Mr. Kimbrough's married life has been blessed in the birth of three children, viz.: Frank, Harry and Claude. In 1872 Mr. Kimbrough began farming in his native county on 100 acres of land, which he bought. He continued there five years and in 1877 he came to Robertson County and bought 233 acres where he now resides and continues farming. Politically he is a Democrat. He has been successful in his occupation and is a good citizen.

1836: Survivors of the Alamo, Sons of DeWitt Colony Texas
James L. Allen (1815-1901) was born in KY and in his later years a resident of current DeWitt Co, TX. He was the oldest of seven children of Samuel and Mary Lamme Allen. He was a student at Marion College when he joined other students who came to Texas seeking adventure and opportunity. Allen joined the Texas army upon arrival and found himself a rifleman and courier in the Alamo garrison. Allen family legends tell of Col. Travis' call for a volunteers on 5 Mar 1836 to break through Mexican army lines to appeal for aid. Because he had a fleet horse and was willing, he was the last courier to be sent by Travis with a final appeal to Fannin at Goliad. He reached Goliad on 8 Mar and with negative results went on to Gonzales on 11 Mar where he learned of the fall of the Alamo. Allen later served as a scout with Deaf Smith at San Jacinto and was Captain of the Texas (Buckeye) Rangers. He was a ranger in Capt. Bell’s Company and fought Indians at Corpus Christi in Jul 1844. He first settled in Indianola where he was mayor and justice of the peace. He married Frederica M. Manchan and had seven children. He was captured and imprisoned on Saluria Island during the Civil War while serving as tax assessor in Calhoun Co, TX. Refusing to take the oath of allegiance to the Union forces, he escaped by swimming to the mainland at Port Lavaca. In 1867 Allen settled between Hochheim and Concrete on a farm of 260 acres near the head waters of Cuero Creek. He owned a stage line which ran from Indianola through DeWitt County. A Baptist and a Mason, he died near Yoakum on 5 Apr 1901 and is buried in the Allen family cemetery near Hochheim.

Family records indicate that Elizabeth, daughter of William was born 18 Dec 1802 probably in Louisiana. This does not appear to be her. This appears to be Eli Chance son of Philemon Chance and Elizabeth Cagle who were married 19 Sep 181 in Amite County, Louisiana.

He always lived a correct life and was one of the leading members of the Second Presbyterian Church in Memphis. John Graham was reared to farm labor and attended the common schools at [p.352] home until 1858, when he attended school at Greensboro, N. C. Subsequently he was under the instruction of a teacher at a private school and remained there until the breaking out of the late war. In 1863, when only sixteen years of age, he enlisted in Company A, McGee's regiment cavalry, and for a year operated in Eastern Arkansas. In 1864 he joined Gen. Price in his Missouri raid, was in the battle of Pilot Knob and in all the battles until West Port, when, holding the field until Price could escape with the wagon train, our subject was captured, taken to Kansas City and later to Fort Leavenworth, where he was held in captivity, and after some time was removed to Camp Morton, Ind., and here retained until the close of the war, being released about June 1. He immediately started for home and made the journey from Memphis on foot. He at once took charge of his father's farm. In 1866 he went to Mebaneville school, remained there one year and then came home, residing with his parents for one year, From there he removed to the bottoms, engaged in agricultural pursuits for himself and there remained three years. Following this he took charge of the old homestead, while his father went to Memphis, and tilled the soil for five years, after which his father gave him an interest in the place, on which he erected a dwelling and there resided. At the time of the father's death he bought out the heirs and moved back to the old homestead. Since then he has cleared about sixty acres and now has 500 in a fine state of cultivation, and on another tract near by he has sixty acres under cultivation. He moved his gin to the home place, has a good dwelling, orchard and is considered one of the best farmers in the county. He is quite extensively engaged in stock raising, principally mules, and has been very successful at this, raising some of the largest and finest mules ever seen in the State, and as good as any from Kentucky or in fact, any State. He seeds down a large part of his farm to improve and fertilize the soil. He raises large crops of cotton and corn and is a practical, as well as a scientific farmer. His farm embraces about 600 acres under cultivation, lying on the west slope of Crowley's Ridge, and presents a magnificent view, for, from his residence, nearly every acre is spread out like a picture before the eye. He was married in December, 1870, to Miss Jennie Allen, a daughter of Abijah Allen, one of the early settlers and prominent farmers of St. Francis County. Eight children were the result of this union: Mary C., Charles C. (died at the age of three years), John M., Abijah Allen (died at the age of three weeks), Jennie Clay, Willie Vernon (died at the age of three years), Carey Osceola and James Franklin. Mrs. Graham is a member of the Presbyterian Church. In 1888 Mr. Graham joined with his partners in the large mercantile firm at Wynne. He is the leading spirit in all movements pertaining to the good of the country, and is not only a leading farmer, but is a member of the leading commercial firm in Cross County.

Price in his Missouri campaign. He was wounded at the battle of Pilot Knob, taken prisoner and confined at St. Louis and Alton until February 17, when he was exchanged at Richmond. He regained his command in time to surrender at Marshall, Tex. After this he came home and followed farming until 1874, and was then deputy sheriff, for two years. In 1876 he was elected sheriff, and served six years in succession, after which he farmed for the same length of time. In 1888 he was elected county and circuit clerk, which position he fills at the present time to the satisfaction of all. He is the owner of 100 acres of land near Dover, with eighty acres under cultivation, and has 420 acres in Yell County with 100 acres under cultivation. His marriage occurred on November 21, 1867, to Miss Josephine White, a native of this county and the daughter of Robert White, who came to Pope County as early as 1840. Mr. White was a merchant for many years, both at Norristown and Dover. He died in 1864. Mr. and Mrs. Hogins are the parents of six children: Mary R. (wife of A. J. White of Dover), John F., Augustus S., William R., Emma and Hallie. Mr. Hogins is a member of the Masonic fraternity, Dover Lodge No. 17 and Russellville Chapter No. 76. He is a member of the K. of P., Russellville Lodge No. 47, in which he is chancellor commander, and is also a member of the K. of H. No. 1353, in which he is F. R. The family are members of the Methodist Episcopal Church South, and are held in high estimation in the community. Mr. Hogins has taken an active interest in political matters for years and is a wide-awake, enterprising citizen.

Ben H. Allen.  In sketching the life of this gentleman it is but just to say that his good name is above reproach, and that he has won the confidence and esteem of all who know him.  As a tiller of the soil he has been quite successful, and is still following that calling.  He was born in North Carolina, February 10, 1838, to William and Nancy (Crump) Allen, both of whom were born in North Carolina, the father being an agriculturist by occupation.  Their marriage took place in their native State in 1835, and resulted in the birth of ten children, nine of whom are now living, the subject of this sketch being the eldest.  The other members of the family living are Frank, Bettie (wife of J. J. Micenhimer), Lucy (wife of John Thompson), Sallie (wife of J. Burns), Cara (wife of Phil Randel), Fannie (wife of G, Lanier), and Maggie (wife of Mr. Bennett); George is deceased.  About 1856 the father of those children was judge of Stanly County, and was magistrate for a number of years.  He died in 1885, a member of the Methodist Episcopal Church South, also a Mason.  His wife died in 1870, a member of the same church as himself.  Ben H. Allen was married in 1869, to Miss Bettie Howell of Pope County, and to this marriage two children have been born: Minnie and Bettie.  He was called upon to mourn the death of his wife in 1874, she being a member of the Methodist Episcopal Church South, and in Stanly County, N. C., he was married, in 1877 to Miss Eugenia Randel, by whom he has four children: Bennie, Randel, Samuel and Loy.  Mr. Allen is a well-to-do farmer, and is the owner of 320 acres of land, of which 155 acres are under cultivation.  He emigrated from North Carolina to Arkansas in 1859, and has since been a resident of Pope county.  In 1861 he enlisted in Company B, Second Arkansas Cavalry, and served as a private soldier on the Confederate side until 1865, taking part in the battles of Murfreesboro, Chickamauga, Jonesboro and Nashville.  Since the war he has devoted his time to farming, and not only is his land valuable for farming, but it is also heavily underlaid with coal.  Mr. Allen and his wife are members of the Methodist Episcopal Church, and he is a member of Russellville Lodge No. 254, of the A. F. & A. M.

W. P. Phillips (deceased), whose name occupies a substantial place in the memory of his many former acquaintances, was born in Tennessee, though reared in Alabama, having gone there when a child. He was a grandson of Col. John Phillips who fought in the War of 1812, and a son of John Phillips, a Kentuckian by birth. The subject of this sketch reached his manhood in Alabama, and there followed merchandising and farming, being very successful before the war. He was married to Miss Ann H. Stewart, also of Alabama nativity, and the daughter of William and Mary (Hogins) Stewart, originally from North Carolina. They were reared in Tennessee, where they were married, and later moved back to Alabama, where they were well-to-do farmers. The father died when Mrs. Phillips was but a little girl. She was the only daughter and remained with her parents till her marriage, which occurred in 1846. Mr. Phillips was a prominent and influential farmer and merchant, and during the war served in the commissary department till the close of the struggle, spending most of his time in Georgia. He lost very heavily in that conflict, but at its close resumed his farming and merchandising pursuits. In 1869 he moved with his family to Hale County, Ala., where he manufactured the Avery cotton-gin. He went to Memphis, Tenn., in 1873, having purchased large tracts of land in Crittenden County, Ark., in 1871, with the intention of opening a farm there, but he died before his plans were consummated. Mr. and Mrs. Phillips were the parents of four children, of whom three are yet living, namely: Mrs. Virginia Avery, Mrs. Alice Quinn and Mrs. Willie Cheatham. Minnie died of yellow fever in 1878. Mr. Phillips died December 31, 1874. He was an excellent man, a Master Mason, a firm believer in Christianity and the Bible, and was admired by all who knew him. Mrs. Phillips lived in Memphis till 1884, when she moved to Crittenden County on the land that her husband had intended to open, and where she has a good farm of 160 acres. She is an estimable Christian lady, and enjoys the universal respect of her neighbors and acquaintances.

Mrs. Augustus Chapman Allen [Charlotte Baldwin], who has but lately passed away at the age of ninety, was also a pioneer at Nacogdoches, whence she removed to Houston, which place she had the honor of naming when first laid out by her husband and brother-in-law in 1836. She was a prominent figure in the social life of this city while it was the capital, and until the weakness of extreme old age compelled her withdrawal from active participation.

1922: A Centennial History of Arkansas, edited by Dallas T. Herndon, the Director of the Dept. of Archives & History, published by The S. J. Clarke Publishing Co., Chicago-Little Rock, 1922

Ben ALLEN, sherriff of White Co. & a resident of Searcy, is ever found prompt & faithful in the discharge of his official duties & his record is one which reflects credit & honor upon himself & has proven highly satisfactory to his constituents. A native son of Ark., he was born in Cleburne Co., Sept 23, 1872, his parents being Thomas & Missouri (BUTLER) ALLEN. The ALLEN family has been represented in this state from pioneer times. The grandfather, Eli ALLEN, was a native of Virginia, born in 1804 & followed farming in that state ere his removal to Ark. in 1818. He first made his way to New Orleans, thence up the Mississippi & White Rivers to Des Arc, from which point he traveled to Heber Springs, becoming one of the earliest settlers in that district. He fished, hunted, trapped & carried the furs to Ark. Post, trading among the Indians. He had seen hundreds of buffaloes in droves on the western plains & he passed through all of the experiences & hardships of pioneer life. In the early days he was a squatter but afterward entered land from the government & engaged in farming and on his land he reared his family. He departed this life at the age of 85 years. His son, Thomas ALLEN, was born in what was then Van Buren Co. & is now Cleburne Co., in 1823, & his life record covered the intervening years to 1888, when his death occurred. His wife was born in Missouri & died in 1919 at the age of 65 years. Thomas ALLEN was educated in the old-time subscription school, the schoolhouse being a log structure with split log benches & puncheon floor. Reared amid pioneer surroundings he became familiar with all of the conditions of life on the frontier & bore his share in the work of early development & progress. In 1861 he enlisted for service in the Confederate army, joining the Tenth Ark. Infantry, with which he served the greater part of the time, going to Miss. under Capt. MILLER. He participated in the battle of Shiloh & served throughout the period of the Civil War. With his return from military life he again settled in Van Buren Co., where he followed the occupation of farming, homesteading land in that locality. The tract which he secured was covered with timber & he had to clear most of this. At one time he owned a thousand acres of land, for which he paid only a dollar an acre. In the early days most of his trading was done at Batesville, at Des Arc & at Little Rock. He crossed the ice on the Ark. River at Little Rock in order to get to market. There was much wild game to be had in this section of the country in those days and the hunter had no difficulty in securing meat for the table. During the Civil War Mr. ALLEN lost everything he had accumulated and when he returned home his stock consisted only of an old mule. With undaunted courage he took up the task of regaining his lost possessions & for many years engaged in general farming & stock raising. At a later day he removed to Texas, where he purchased land & his last years were spent in the Lone Star State. He always gave his political allegiance to the democratic party & both he & his wife were consistant members of the Missionary Baptist Church. In their family were born 9 children, 6 of whom are still living: J. G., a practicing physician, residing at Commerce, Texas; Ben, of this review; John, living in Hunt Co., Tex., where he follows farming; Theopholis, a photographer, also living in Hunt Co., Tex.; Vester, a government mail clerk, living at Waco, Tex.; and Dora, the wife of Joe TEDFORD of Pueblo, Colorado. One daughter, Effie, died at the age of 23 years & the 2 children died in infancy.

Ben ALLEN was educated in the common schools of Heber Springs & remained in Cleburne Co. through the period of his boyhood & youth. He afterward taught for a few terms in the rural districts of Cleburne Co. & then took up the occupation of farming. He bought & cleared land, securing a part of his father's old homestead & devoted his attention to the task of developing the fields and producing substantial crops. In 1893 he came to White Co. & entered the employ of the Millen Lumber Co. at St. Louis, Missouri, occupying the position of general manager for 8 years. He next purchased 160 acres of land near Beebe & while engaged in farming there he served as constable & as deputy sheriff for a period of 8 years. He was afterward elected justice of the peace at Beebe & occupied that position for four years, while in 1920 he was elected to the office of sheriff, entering upon the duties of the position on the 1st of Jan., following, and is serving in an acceptable manner. He still owns his farm of 112 acres, from which he is deriving a good rental.

Mr. ALLEN was married to Miss Jennie THOMPSON, who was born in White Co., Ark., a daughter of Wes Thompson, a farmer & stock dealer. They have become parents of six children: Opal, who is the wife of Albert BEVILL, a farmer of White county; Homer, farming in the same county; Nellie, the wife of Elbert WALLS, a barber of Cabot, Arkansas, Elvis, Velda and Oatley, all at home. Mrs. ALLEN is a member of Presbyterian church. Mr. ALLEN belongs to the Masonic lodge at Beebe and is also identified with the Woodmen of the World. His political endorsement is given to the demcratic party and keeps well informed on the vital questions and issues of the day. In all matters of citizenship he stands with those men who are seeking to promote progress and uphold high civic standards.

John Hoyt Williams. Sam Houston. The Life and Times of the Liberator of Texas: An Authentic American Hero

Chapter 3 (pages 61 - 65)
Since 1824, Houston had been a frequent house guest of Robert Allen of Gallatin, Tennessee. Allen and his brother John had been officers with Andrew Jackson during the War of 1812, and had met young Sam while on campaign against the Creeks in 1814, and at the Hermitage on many occasions since. Their friendship continued over the years, and from 1819 to 1827 Robert served as congressman, two of his terms alongside the future governor. (Crawford p. 162)

John Allen, an imperious planter and horsebreeder of high repute in Tennessee, lived in "a stately mansion" on the bluffs of the Cumberland River, some twenty miles northeast of Nashville, and Houston, at times in the company of Jackson or members of the Junto, was wont to visit him and attend the almost weekly races. On one of those visits in 1824 he first met Eliza, who at almost fifteen was the eldest of John's progeny. A slender blonde, Eliza was already an excellent horsewoman, and her vivacious charm and equestrian skill made a deep impression on Houston.

In the summer of 1825, Robert Allen wrote Houston a curious missive, apologizing for being as yet unable to repay a hundred dollars the congressman has loaned him. "Can't you come up to Gallatin and spend a week?" he inquired, nonchalantly noting that "there are some, no doubt, that would like to see you killed." Such men were, however, not to be taken seriously, for they were cowards: "Nobody doubts Sam Houston's bravery, many his discretion." This was fully a year before Houston’s scrape with John Erwin reached the serious stage, and Allen’s use of the word "discretion," in the context of the times, hints strongly at his bachelor friend’s womanizing. No matter the threats, Houston returned to Allen’s home often. Over the years his attraction to Eliza grew, and the allure of an alliance of the powerful Allen clan was surely not absent from his calculations. His eye was trained on Eliza with the full approbation of her parents. The match, no matter the difference in age, would be a good one for both parties. The Allens were of the genteel "Old Tennessee" elite, a family well-connected in politics, social circles and the planter economy, and Andrew Jackson’s most promising protege was obviously destined for greatness. It appeared to be an auspicious pairing. So, quite naturally, a "low-intensity" courtship of Eliza continued, and as governor, the suitor was in Tennessee full-time, permitting him the luxury of watching his nearby bride-to-be blossom.

Houston made two fateful decisions. He would marry and he would seek re-election - in that order. In November, Houston wrote gleefully to his cousin that "I am not married but it may be the case in a few weeks." This was an odd bit of news indeed, for no engagement had yet been announced. It might have appeared "indecent haste" on his part, since in polite society engagements were commonly a year or more long. It soon seemed that his marriage plans had gone awry.

Early in December, in a letter to Tennessee congressman John Marable, he hinted of serious problems in his affair of the heart. "I have as usual 'small blow ups' " he wrote; "What the devil is the matter with the gals I can't say, but there has been hell to pay." He did not elaborate, but his relationship with Eliza was obviously less that tranquil. It had indeed been 'a small blow up' for just a few weeks later, in Gallatin, the governor and Eliza exchanged rings and formally announced their engagement, causing much benign excitement in the state - enhancing Houston’s chances for re-election. Their wedding, scheduled a mere month later, would be the social affair of the season, but it also set gossips' tongues moving like windmills. Surely something was amiss.

~~~~~
Eliza, now eighteen, was, in the words of a relative, "not pretty, but dignified, graceful and queenly in her appearance." She had apparently been courted by other hopefuls, but had rejected their intentions, for perhaps not "of the heart." One of the most recurrent themes in the literature dealing with Houston and Eliza is that he had a rival for her affections.
In any event, the impending nuptials hugely pleased Andrew Jackson and his wife, whose wedding present was Rachel’s own prized sterling flatware, a testimony of the bond between Houston and the Jacksons.
The ceremony took place in the mansion of Eliza’s father on January 22, 1829. It was a candlelight service presided over by the Reverend William Hume, and scores of distinguished guests were present; " a cavalcade worthy of a monarch," according to one report.
The newlyweds spent their marriage night in John Allen’s capacious home - in separate rooms - and departed the next day, forced by a severe storm to overnight at the home of Robert Martins, on the Nashville Road. There, it had been claimed, Eliza unexpectedly and explosively told Mrs. Martin "that she hates her husband." Yet others soon described the Houstons as "an affectionate couple." Then they settled into rooms at the Nashville Inn, probably on January 26.
It would seem that relations between the newlyweds deteriorated immediately, and probably for a variety of reasons. One reason, logic suggests, was the Nashville Inn itself. It was routinely clogged with Houston’s drinking buddies and fellow political hacks and, given his strong proclivities for spirits and the fact that he was furtively campaigning. The Inn may have provided a rude awakening for the sheltered young plantation girl. Eliza packed her bags and abandoned the inn and her husband on April 9, less than three months after exchanging marriage vows, and fled back to her stunned family.
Surprisingly accurate gossip about the governor’s marital problems was rife even before Eliza bolted. Andrew Jackson, for one, was pessimistic. The president immediately grasped what a separation or divorce would mean for Houston’s carefully nurtured political career. The crisis, then, did not come from out of the blue, for Jackson learned of it a full week before Eliza’s flight, and from a third party. More intriguing, the president felt he knew enough about it to assess the blame as Houston’s. What followed was a rambling and chaotic letter from Houston to his father-in-law; a letter brimming with hints, yet empty conclusions. This letter represents Houston’s only record of his separation from Eliza. Among other words, he claimed "she was cold to me and I thought she did not love me."
The most famous - and least clear - letter that Sam Houston ever wrote followed Eliza home and landed on the Allen's like a second bombshell. He implied that Eliza’s flight was inappropriate, thought not necessarily without reason. The letter indicates that Houston had been jealous. He admitted he that he had questioned his wife’s virtue, but that then he had abruptly changed his mind, and had told her that he believed her faithful. "Eliza stands acquitted by me." The distraught husband asked that John Allen intervene. He was permitted to see Eliza briefly in her father’s parlor where he begged for her forgiveness. On bended knee, "with tears streaming down his face" he pleaded for her to return to Nashville with him." However, she refused.
Anguished, Sam Houston rode back to Nashville and shut himself up in his rooms at the inn, giving himself over to self-pity and "liberal doses of John Barleycorn."
News of the separation spread like gunsmoke in a battle, for the Allen family lost little time in making public "that their chaste daughter had been wronged."
Tennesseeans of the age were not forgiving of such embarrassment on part of their chief executive. This was a scandal, one in which a great Tennessee family had suffered public humiliation. Houston was burned in effigy at Gallatin, and mobs in Nashville became "so threatening that local militia units were called out." Houston was "deeply mortified, but refused to explain this matter." After a few besotted days Houston decided that his only course of action was to resign the governorship.
Houston’s bridges - matrimonial and political - were burned, and one week later on April 23, in disguise and flanked by two friends, he left the Nashville Inn and walked nervously through the morning crowds. Later, he boarded a small southbound steamer, the Red Rover and departed to the frontier.
What the curious are left with, corroborated by Houston’s chaotic letter to John Allen, is the matter of his jealousy, which appears indisputable. His penchant for alcohol influenced his behavior considerably. She claimed "he is a demented man."
Eliza waited seven years to obtain a divorce on grounds of abandonment, while Houston waited eight. Ironically, both were remarried in 1840, she to Elmore Douglass.
She died in 1862 (sic), a year earlier than her first husband, and was buried in an unmarked grave along with her secret, the greatest mystery in the life of Sam Houston.
