1850: Marriage, Death and Legal Notices From Early Alabama Newspapers 1819-1893, compiled by Pauline Jones Gandrud, Southern Historical Press, 1981
Southern Advocate, Huntsville, Madison County, Alabama
April 10, 1850
Died in the county on 8th (married 1849 Luvica Achard), after a long and painful illness, Mrs, Levisa Campbell, wife of George W. Campbell aged about 25.

Notes: The 1849 marriage date is probably a transcription error. The marriage record has not yet been found but Luvica had an 8 year old son who was living with his grandparents in the 1850 census. 1841 seems a more likely marriage date. A George Campbell  appears in the 1850 Madison County census (5 November 1850) with wife Louisa b. about 1825 in Alabama and a number of children ranging in ages from 4 to 12. In the same census a G.W. Campbell is listed with wife Kisiah b. abt 1826 in Tennessee with two children ages  1 and 4. If either of these are our George the the above transcription is wrong. No other candidate appears in the 1850 census.

Undated will bequeathed his "plantation" of 200 acres to his wife Levina Akard in lieu of her dower. After her death the property was to be divided equally among his heirs. He appointed her executor. Will was witnessed by Ahab Bowen and Henry Bowen on 24 April 1849. Proved on 29 Aug 1850. Levina's securities were F. Dunnegan and G.W. Hays in the amount of $4000. Miller W. Easley became guardian for John Akard, a minor heir of Jonas Akard. Children were listed as: Louisa Jane Akard, Henry L. Akard, Mary A. Akard, Martha A. Akard, James M. Akard, Kisire (Keziah) A. Akard.

1850 Federal Census, 11th District, Hardin County, Tennessee (29 Nov 1850)

233 Jonas Achord (20 AL, Stage Driver, illiterate, in the Samuel Pinkerton household)

Notes: This Jonas has not yet been positively identified. It could be the son of David Acord who is in the 1850 Madison County, Alabama census (two weeks later). It is conceivable that a stage driver could show up in two census records and the age and birth state match, however, the occupation does not. This could be an as yet unidentified son of Joseph Acord of Jackson County, Alabama. A Joseph Acord and presumed son Enoch appears in the 1860 census for nearby Hardeman County, Tennessee.

1851: Probate file of Joseph Akard, Polk County, Missouri, Probate Box 4

Estate papers for Joseph Akard show that William, Andrew and Joseph were operating the whiskey still. There are account receipts for many quarts, half-gallons and gallons of whiskey. There are also medical receipts for the summer of 1846. The last date of the medical bill for three days and nights attendance was October 18, 1846. The letters of administration were issued the following day to Henry Akard. He made principal with John Hunt, William Foushee, Silas Fox and Elijah Fox securities for a bond of $3500. The inventory was taken on 12 Nov 1846 and the estate sale held 2 days later. On 15 Feb. 1849 Keziah Akard received $200 as her "dowry." After Henry Akard's death Keziah became administrator. The heirs were listed as: James Jasper Akard, Priscilla Akard, William Jonas Akard and Mary Levina Akard.

The 1881 History of Marion & Clinton Counties, Illinois
T. E. ALLEN
The present sheriff of Clinton county, Illinois, is a native of Montgomery county, this state, and was born Aug. 28th, 1833.  His father, Covington Allen, was a native of East Tennessee.  He emigrated to Illinois in 1827, and settled in Sangamon county, and afterwards removed to Montgomery.  On the 16th of November, 1844, he came to Clinton county and settled in Town 2, where he remained until his death which took place in April, 1865.  He was a farmer by occupation, and followed that business during the greater part of his life.  While a resident of Montgomery county, Ill., he married Mrs. Lucinda LOOMIS, nee EARLY, a native of Tenn.  She was the widow of William Loomis.  She had three children by her first marriage, Covington Allen having four children by a former marriage, two sons and two daughters.  By the marriage of Covington Allen and Mrs. Loomis, there were five children born to them, three of whom are living—all sons.  The mother died in november, 1872.  Thomas E. in his youth had but limited means for receiving an education.  He was raised on the farm, and did a man’s work while he was yet a boy.  In 1857 he was elected constable of his township, and since that time has been continuously in office, either as constable, deputy marshal, deputy sheriff or sheriff.  In 1874 he was appointed to fill the vacancy in the office of sheriff, caused by the resignation of Charles HAGER, and in November of the same year he was elected sheriff.  He had been deputy sheriff under Hager.  In 1876, he was regularly nominated for the office of sheriff, and was elected, becoming his own successor.  He received a majority of 1,036 votes, which was largely in excess of his party’s vote.  In 1880, he was again nominated and elected by a majority of 656 votes.  He is now discharging the duties of the office in a manner that gives complete satisfaction to his many friends.  Few sheriffs in Illinois have had more experience that Mr. Allen.  He is a terror to evil-doers, and criminals give him a wide berth.  He has the reputation of taking a man when he goes for him, no matter who or what he is.  On the 18th of March, 1858, he married Miss Mary Jane COOPER, who was born and raised in Fayette county, Illinois.  By this union there have been born to them six children, three of whom are living.  One died in infancy.  Ellen died in her twenty-first year.  Hattie was the wife of John HARBICH.  She died in February, 1881, from consumption, aged nineteen years.  The surviving children are William T., Lucinda and Mary.  His wife is a member of the Catholic Church.  Politically, Mr. Allen is a sound uncompromising Democrat, and has voted that ticket since 1854.

Mr. Allen is a genial companion, a firm friend, and a good citizen, and has a host of warm personal friends throughout the entire county.

Notes. T. E. is Thomas E. Allen, son of Covington Allen, widower of Christina Acord, and his second wife Lucinda Early.

"HENRY AKARD - an old settler in Polk County, Missouri, and for several years a preacher in Liberty Association, was born in Tennessee, August 13, 1813. As he grew up he received such an education as the common schools of his day afforded. In September, 1832, he was married to Miss Lavinia Jones, and soon after, in the same year, moved to Polk County, Missouri. Here for some ten years, he lived a stranger to God. He was converted and baptized under the ministry of Eld. D. R. Murphy, for years one of the leading ministers of that section of the state."
