Acord Genealogy

These pages document the history of the Acord family from Cornelius Acord, born about 1760, who married Barbara Eaker in Lincoln County, North Carolina. It is our intent to, through this page, to share the results of our research and facilitate the exchange of information among Acord researchers. With your help we hope to make this as complete a history of this family as possible.

WAP Edition now Available. Do you have a web-enabled phone or PDA? Portions of our research database are now available on these devices by using the built-in microbrowser to go to larkcom.us/ancestry. I developed the WAP Edition so that I would have ready access to research data from cemeteries, libraries or any place where I may not have access to a computer. It has only been tested with the Motorola MPx200 phone running Microsoft SmartPhone 2002. If you have a different phone your feedback will help with continued development. Also, I am very interested in how others might use this new technology. If you find this feature useful please drop me an email.

Latest Breakthrough

Additional evidence has been found of siblings of Jonas Acord in Alabama and the 1846 payment from the estate settlement of Cornelius and Barbara Acord to Jonas Acord and the heirs of Christina Acord. The latter indicates that Jonas was alive in 1846. Jonas Akard of Polk County, Missouri was deceased by 1846. This seems to clearly eliminate Jonas Akard of Polk County as the son of Cornelius Acord and Barbara Eaker. Another new fact is that in 1837 John Acord was bonded as guardian of older sister Catherine during the term of her insanity, which appears to have lasted about 18 months, after which she moved to Alabama near her brothers Jonas and Joseph.

Most Wanted

Cornelius Acord (c1760-1839). Who were his parents and siblings? We know that he enlisted in the Maryland Line in Frederick County, Maryland at the age of 16 and that after the war he migrated to Rutherford/Lincoln County, North Carolina where he married Barbara Eaker in 1784. His line migrated west through Tennessee to Arkansas and Alabama. Family lore is that Cornelius immigrated from Germany with a brother. Who was this brother? A good possibility for his father is Adam Eckert/Eckhart/Eckhard/Erchard who purchased land in Frederick County, Maryland in 1760, sold it in 1763, and appeared in 1768-69 Rent Roll for Frederick County.

Special Thanks

Mrs. Virgie Wulff, A retired school teacher, spent over thirty years researching the Acord family, and more than thirty affiliated family lines including a large portion of my maternal ancestors. She spent countless hours on hands and knees in dimly lit courthouse basements rummaging through un-cataloged records, interviewing distant relatives and traipsing through mountains and woods seeking the burial places of our ancestors; all before the advent of the personal computer and the Internet. Her research tools were pencil, paper and a strong desire to document the past. After retirement she traveled the country in a motor home, searching for records, interviewing distant relatives and organizing family reunions. We never met Mrs. Wulff, but wherever we have gone in our search, she has been there first. She always intended to publish a book "Family Trees Grown on Mulberry Creek" but, sadly, she passed away in February of 1999 before her work was completed. In 1990 she passed the torch to Mrs. Velda Nichols who spent years computerizing Mrs. Wulff's files. I am in awe of the tireless efforts of Mrs. Wulff, Mrs. Nichols and all those intrepid seekers of truth and knowledge who came before us, and to each I offer my most humble thanks.
